The Ten Best Practices for Teaching Online

  • 746Be Present at Your Course …. “being present digitally for your course is the most fundamental and most important of all the practices” (pg. 44)   For this to be effective in my course I will provide:   1.A video that the learner can access at anytime 2.Frequent announcements or reminder to keep learner on track  3.Schedule a meeting at the beginning of the course either by skype or phone to  meet  the  learner and answer questions  4.Provide  contact information to the learner
  • Create a Supportive Online Course Community…. “Building a supportive online community requires using a set of diverse and balance dialogue patterns….student-to-student, faculty to student and student to resource should be about equal in any course design…” (pg.47) For this to be effective in my course I will provide: 1. Student-to-student: provide some group work, some discussion forums areas or some games that can be played in teams, such as scrabble or jeopardy 2. Faculty to Learner: a video, podcast or a scheduled check in time so that any concerns/problems can be addressed quickly 3. Learn to resource: links to the resources that will help the learner with resources, also an area where learners can add to the resources for future learners
  • Develop a Set of Explicit Workload and Communication Expectations for Your Learners and Yourself… “this best practice helps your work-life balance and models good habits for your learn as well” (pg 48) For this to be effective in my course I will provide: 1. Clear guidelines of course expectations (when assignments are due, come commitments expected) 2. Post a schedule so learner will know when I am available online for questions, when they can expect an answer if they email me
  • Use a Variety of Large Group, Small Group, and Individual Work ExperiencesBuilding in options and opportunities for students to work together and individually is a key characteristic of good learning design” (pg 50) For this to be effective in my course I will provide: 1. Provide an activity that requires a learning partner and a clear outline of what is expected in the activity 2. Provide a forum discussion area with a focused question for group learning 3. Chance to sign up for study groups online with and without an instructor 4. Clear guidelines of when all assignments are to be completed
  • Use Synchronous and Asynchronous Activities… Sometimes there is nothing better than a real-time interactive brainstorming and sharing discussion; other times, the requirement to think, plan, write and reflect is what makes learning most effective for an individual” For this to be effective in my course I will provide: 1. Post a scenario and allow everyone to comment and brainstorm a solution 2. have a live discussion via blackboard or another online site
  • Ask for Informal Feedback Early in the Term….”Often early feedback can alert you to students having difficulty with something as fixable as access to material, or some minor technology glitch” (pg 52) For this to be effective in course I will provide: 1. Provide informal feedback in the first week or two of the course, let the learner know how they are doing
  • Prepare Discussion Posts That Invite Responses, Questions, Discussions and Reflections… “the communication space that is the heart and soul of the online course community is the discussion board”(pg 53) For this to be effective in my course, I will provide: 1. Provide a discussion board with open ended questions to encourage critical thinking and monitor this board with follow up questions 2. Get learners to respond to other learner’s comments and support their comments with a rationale 3. have learners post their own questions for comments and lead in the discussion posts
  • Think Digital for all Course Content… “most students expect to be able to access course content form wherever they happen to be and whenever they have even five to fifteen minuter to read, think or reflect” (pf 54) For this to be effective in my course, I will provide: 1. The course to be accessible for tablet, i Phones and as many different technology avenues as possible 2. Ask the learner to provide resources that they use to see if they can be combined with existing technology
  • Combine Core Concept Learning with Customized and personalized Learning …”… this practice requires faculty, as part of their course design process prior to the course to identify the core concepts, questions, and performance goals for a course” (pg 55) For this to be effective in my course, I will provide: 1. Speak with the learner early in the course to ask what their goals for the course are 2. Identify what the course goals are for my course while I am designing the course
  • Plan a Good Closing and Wrap Activity for the Course…”…these learning events can provide a final opportunity for faculty to remind student of core concepts and fundamental principles” For this to be effective in course, I will provide: 1. Check in with the learner and help to make a list of what needs to be done, reducing their stress 2. Provide a couple of real time chat forums to talk about what is left in the course, one can be learner led and one instructor led 3.Provide a discussion board asking what is the one thing that they have learner the most, why, and how will they apply this learning
